Every technology vendor pitch now includes AI, which makes vendor-neutral evaluation more valuable than ever. The question is no longer whether a product uses AI — it is whether that use solves a problem you actually have.
Start with workflows, not models. The businesses getting real returns from AI identified a specific, measurable bottleneck — ticket triage, document processing, meeting summarization, threat detection — and applied AI there. The ones struggling bought platforms first and went looking for problems later.
Evaluate data readiness honestly. AI features are only as good as the data they can reach. If your customer data lives in five disconnected systems, an AI layer will amplify the disconnection, not fix it.
Demand proof in your environment. Vendor demos run on curated data. Insist on a pilot against your own workflows with success criteria defined in advance. A trustworthy provider welcomes this; a pressured sales cycle resists it.
Keep governance in the room. Data privacy, retention, and regulatory obligations apply to AI features exactly as they do to the rest of your stack. Build the review into procurement rather than discovering it during an audit.
AI will reward the deliberate. A disciplined evaluation process — the same one that governs any sound technology decision — is the entire advantage.
